what’s important

what’s important in your clothes? I always try make sure that I’d be able to chase someone who stole a purse from a lady when I buy shoes. what I like about the outlier brand is that they go so far as to demonstrate that you can punch someone while looking good, due to the cut of their shirt….and who doesn’t want that?
New Face Around the Studio

Late last year we added a new teammate at SLP. With work, and life, and the holidays, and even more work, it’s taken me until now to tell you all about her! She’s Emily, and while her ‘title’ is marketing assistant, I’m sure she’ll be wearing a few other hats as well. That’s fortunate because she likes hats, literally. She’ll be doing behind the scenes shooting and remarking, as well as helping to keep our portfolios, mailers, and websites current. Stay tuned for updates on goings-on at the studio and on location. I told her I was going to blog about her and here’s how the conversation went:
who were you?
I was a corporate office girl who wanted to be a working creative. I’d worked in advertising, recruiting and business development. I had worked as a textile librarian, which was pretty cool, too. But I knew I wanted to make a living out in the art and design world.
who do you want to be when you grow up?
Right now, I’m pretty immersed in the photography world by working with you guys, and assisting photo stylist, annette joseph. I’d love to learn producing, learn everything about photo styling…I’m interested in writing. Oh yeah, and I want to do that all over the world. How much time do you have?
what are you most looking forward to on your new adventure as a freelance hat-wearer?
call times at 10:00 a.m. and collaborating with fun, funny people who challenge me and are passionate about the same things as myself.
here’s the best photo I could find….she’s the one on the left!
Local Heroes by the Dozen

I recently had the opportunity to photograph representatives from twelve area organizations that are making a real difference in Atlanta. It was easily one of the most enjoyable and rewarding pro bono projects I’ve ever done. The photos I shot will be used in a calendar for The Atlanta Resource Foundation, which is headed by Allen Bell. “God gives us incredible ability to connect people inside the city limits of Atlanta who are doing great things,” Allen says. “The ARF is simply a conduit that quietly connects people who want to help Atlanta.”
The calendar is being designed by local ad agency, House of Current, with each month highlighting a different local charity. The shoot was held in-studio with a 8×10 foot chalk drawing of Atlanta serving as the backdrop. The backdrop was drawn by local artist, Kyle Brooks, and was customized for each month. After each shot was finished, Kyle would swoop in and quickly alter the drawing to reflect the changing seasons. It was great watching him work, and it really added something special to the shoot.
“We knew Scott Lowden was the perfect choice for shooting these portraits because he did such a great job shooting ‘real people’ for a campaign we did for Natick Mall in Boston,” explains HOC President, Lisa Maloof. “One of our art directors is friends with Kyle, and recommended him for the backdrop. As soon as we saw his work, we knew his style would be perfect. Plus, his fun, easygoing personality was a definitely entertaining on set.” Allen Bell adds, “These shots will help to celebrate folks that are doing amazing thing. These people are loving the hardest part of the city to love.“
I loved the chance to put my skill set to use with an Atlanta group that makes a difference for so many people on a daily basis. My favorite part of this shoot has been meeting the incredible people who are focused on the day to day work of helping people change their lives. It was an honor to give back to the community that I’ve called home for so many years. While I can’t showcase the finished shots. I can show this super cool time lapse animation. Who notices what changes about kyle as the seasons progress?

another in my never ending list of home projects, this one for our newly invented study. red cloth covered twisted pair 18 gauge wire, a super cool little acorn button plug, both from sundial wire, and an old industrial cage light from my studio neighbor, highland row antiques. a few quick minutes rewiring and voilà…a custom fixture! now all I need are two ceiling hooks….the search continues.

here’s the swag from the holiday party toy drive. super cool! thanks everyone for bringing a smile to a little person!
the recipients of this year’s loot is pride for parents, a local organization that brings economic development to it’s south Atlanta neighborhood. the south atlanta marketplace will offer the toys for a small sale price, which in turn creates a much needed job for a neighborhood youth. the youth will gain job experience, and parents will maintain dignity by their ability to purchase gifts for family this holiday season. awesome.
