the remains of mining

It’s quite a process to work on personal projects over many years. Some days I’ll walk away with a pile of great images, some days I don’t ever pull out my camera. When you view a tight collection of amazing images you never know how many images were shot, or how many days were spent walking with camera gear on your back and not shooting an picture. I’ve made many journeys around parts northeastern PA to shoot the remains of coal mining. This December I never quite got the perfect confluence of elements, but we’ll see if they work as I put these images next the others from this series. Here is a working image from 01/01/10:

I consider myself fortunate to be able to shoot this saturday for help-portrait here in Atlanta. Their mission is simple: 1.find someone in need 2.take their portrait 3.print their portrait 4.and deliver it. On 12/12/09 there will be over 7000 photographers at more than 608 locations in 58 different countries around the world participating. The Atlanta group is all staffed up but you can always participate by donating some cash to help out!

photo booth 2009

As all of your wonderful people who attended our holiday party last saturday know, we set up a photo booth to capture everyone’s creativity and/or intoxication. Â Here’s one winner from the 1000+ images. Â If you’re sitting down and have some time feel free to peruse the rest here. There’s a ton of images so it’s a bit slow to load. Â have fun!
(you can also purchase prints at cost by following a link on the site-email me with problems or questions)

Sitting in tsu rumaturu cemetary, just outside pitzcuaro, absorbing the sights, sounds, smells. How to even begin to capture this experience with a still photograph?

noche de los muertos

day of the day’s main celebration is during the night of October 31st to November 1st, when believers celebrate their dead relatives by spending the night at their gravesite. The elaborate alters often include candles, flowers, photos, along with any number of ritualized objects from salt, water, bread, to tequila, their relative’s favorite foods, sugar skulls, hobbies, or if they were children the toys they can no longer play with.

just back from italy and editing, editing, editing. when on a trip that is more vacation than work, I shoot first and edit later. always the challenge…to capture what it felt like to be there rather than to simply document what I saw. here is a start, and more to come. let me know if you feel it.

P 40+ with the phase one 80mm lens

the folks at capture integration were nice enough to let me test a camera yesterday.  we were looking at shadow detail and color fringing.  as some of you may know I love to shoot with the sun, a strobe, or HMI pointing right into my lens.  of course that’s a bad idea in the rule book, but who ever got anywhere exciting by following the rules.  check out this shot of sophie…I under exposed the shot with the sun blasting right into the lens, then did what I could in photoshop to make the image fall part.  it looks like it held up pretty well!  click here for a close up.

pro-bono

As an advertising photographer its important to do pro-bono work every so often. Â Its a reason to apply what you know for a good cause, or just any old cause that seems fun. Â Or even just a reason to shoot something cool and I’m always up for shooting something cool. Â Today that took my team and I to jail…fortunately they did let us out afterwards. Â I can’t share the copy just yet, but here’s the start to an interesting ad:
