Many of you are not lucky enough to have a comic strip written about your profession…but photographers have Aaron Johnson.  You may have seen some of his comics posted here from time to time, and I always encourage you to check out his site.  I also just noticed that he has a facebook page, how ironic!  It seems the whole world is on facebook now, so don’t forget to become of a fan of SLP.

I’ve been moving some files around and came across some great old shots, and I mean old-like with film and everything!   I think this was kodak VHC chrome, cross processed to negative.  remember all the fun we had with running film in the wrong chemistry…Keeping your fingers crossed for two hours hoping it came out cool and not like crap?  How can we introduce some randomness into shooting digital?  One way is to shoot from the hip!  I’ll be posting some of these old shots in the coming weeks.  let’s see how far back I can go…

cool..two write-ups in two weeks on altpick.com.  We partnered with Atlanta’s Fitzgerald+Co to help them flush out the visuals on new creative they were working on.  Hey, any day I can work on producing some great visuals with some great art directors is a good day.  Here’s an out take from the shoot I used in a recent promotional mailer.  If you look close you may notice the ‘talent’ is non other than Fitzco’s Matt Blackburn and his son!

printed portfolios

February 13, 2009 | Filed Under blatherings | Leave a Comment

how many of you photographers get work from your website alone?  I’ve probably gotten some, but the clients I really want to work with always want to see a book.  For me, the printed portfolio is still the goal, the ultimate place to showcase my work; my current website is really just a re-purposing of my printed book.  Late yesterday I put the finishing touches on an updated travel book and sent it off…I hope it doesn’t smell like paste when Amy opens it!  So to follow suit I have an updated the travel section on my website…go check it out! This shot is new to some of you:  I thought the beaches in Rio were full of beautiful women..it turns out they’ve all gone to Miami to become fashion models.

galleria dallas

In january my crew and I travelled to Dallas to shoot the Galleria Dallas ad campaign.  As many of you know it takes weeks of editing images, making final picks , placing FPO images in the ads (for position only), waiting for client approval, retouching, etc to get to the final ads.  We’ve finally arrived on my last step before handing it off to the agency, Current Inc., where they’ll add a type treatment and place it in the ad for delivery to the magazine.

altpick news about SLP

February 10, 2009 | Filed Under jobs | Leave a Comment

alternative pick posted a story about a shoot I did last year with Cal Ripken at his field in Aberdeen, MD for Rinnai water heaters.  I know its  old news, but I’ve always heard old news is better than no news!  check it out altpick.com.  Here is an outake from the shoot….and yes, Cal is about the nicest guy ever and great to work with.  He’ll walk the same path 30 times if that’s what it takes to get a great shot.  Thanks Cal.

chinese new year redux

February 2, 2009 | Filed Under blatherings | Leave a Comment

here is another shot from the chinese new year celebration in chinatown.  It’s a little soft, and doesn’t really offer you anything for your eye to focus on…you may even call it a bad photo!  I think it attempts to translate what it felt like to be in the middle of the mayhem.  what do you think?
